In September 1945, Homewood Baptist Church was organized and originally met and worshiped at Homewood School. We moved into an empty store building at the intersection of Highway 701 and 319 in the Homewood Community. In November of 1945, the congregation began building a worship building and in 1946 the building was dedicated. On August 17, 1949, an education building (an old house) for Sunday School was acquired, and we began having Sunday School in that building. In May of 1959, we added a fellowship hall to our church building.
In the late1980s we realized that we were outgrowing our building, purchased land across the highway, built a new facility, and began worship in the new Worship and Education Center in 1994. We continue to worship in this building and have added a picnic shelter and playground area for outside activities.
In 2018, we removed our pews and added comfortable chairs for our members, attendees, and guests.
Throughout the years we have enjoyed our Adult, Sr. Adult, and Youth choirs. But today we have a praise team, and our music is a blended style with contemporary music as well as some of the old favorite hymns.
As in the past, we currently have a very active Senior Adult group who meet at least once a month for coffee, donuts, a movie, and lunch.
Over the past 79 years, we have been blessed by having wonderful men of God to lead our congregation. The pastors who have served the Homewood Baptist Church congregation are: E.P. King, I.B. Little, R. Barnes, Byrd Sexton, W. E Maring, Maynard Allen, Paul Stokes, L. J. Shuman, J. C. Jones, William (Bill) Knight, Bobby Mackey, Interim Pastor, Woodrow Harris, Earl J. Spivey, Jr., and Interim Pastor Jim Evans.
In October 2017, the church body called Steve Cashion as our pastor and he continues to lead our congregation today. He is truly a man of God’s Word and we are blessed that he is our pastor.
